May Day: Civil Society Groups Honour Senator Idris Umar

As workers in Nigeria join their counterparts the world over to commemorate the 2018 International Workers Day, former Minister of Transport and APC Governorship aspirant in Gombe State, Sen. Abdullahi Idris Umar has expressed solidarity with the workforce in Gombe State and Nigeria at large, urging them to continue to uphold and  sustain the spirit of resilience and commitment for the progress and development of the state and the country.

Sen. Idris was speaking while receiving a delegation from a coalition of civil society groups, trade unions and professional Associations under the auspices of North East Coalition of  Labour Right Ambassadors ,Civil Society, Trade Associations and Legal Professionals who came to  honour him as a “resolute and irrepressible champion of the inalienable rights, interests, welfare of the Nigerian workers in the past and the present time”.

Represented by the Chairman of his 2019 Media campaign team, Mr. Jack Tasha, the former Minister enjoined workers to sustain the hands that produce the wealth of the nation just as he throws his weight behind the call for increase in minimum wage as a reciprocal gesture for the workers’ labour and sacrifice.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation and Gombe State Co-ordinator of the coalition,  Comrade Adams Yakubu  Teacher, hailed the “worker- friendly, people-oriented and grassroots attuned disposition of  Senator Idris throughout his storied political and public service career, variously as two term member of the House of Representatives, Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and hyper-active Minister of Transport from 2011-2015.

According to him “Indeed we are not quick to forget the impassioned debates and motions that Senator Idris Umar spearheaded and sponsored respectively when the minimum wage issue arose during the administrations of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua .

Senator Idris Umar contributed quite robustly to the minimum wage debate, placing himself squarely and unwaveringly behind the Nigerian workers’ struggle for emancipation and self-actualisation. Perhaps the valiant senator’s greatest contribution to the welfare and wellbeing of the Nigerian worker is the total overhauling and transformation of the previously moribund Nigerian railway system into a world class rail network that has greatly facilitated the seamless and stress-free movement of goods, products and services across the nation when he held sway as the Hon. Minister of transport.

Given the fact that the down trodden Nigerian worker is at the lowest rung of the income ladder, it is a testament to Senator Idris Umar’s unbending commitment to their welfare that he assiduously ensured that the railway system was modernized and re-invigorated as the acknowledged vehicle for the mass transit of low income earners. Posterity will kindly and graciously repay Senator Idris Umar bountifully in kind and we wish him divinely inspired wisdom, guidance, protection & blessings in all his political pursuits, aspirations or endeavours”- the coordinator concluded.
