The issue of minimum wage and security challenges facing workers and Nigerians as a whole is set to take centre stage as Nigerian workers join their counterparts across the world to celebrate this year’s Workers Day.
Organised labour under the auspices of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) has in the past three years been clamouring for the implementation of a new minimum wage.
However, three years down the line, while progress has been made with ongoing negotiations to achieve a new minimum wage, workers will be disappointed that the government has not reached an agreement with their unions to implement a new wage of N66,500.
Speaking during the pre May Day lecture yesterday in Abuja, President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Comrade Ayuba Wabba, decried the incessant killings of Nigerians by the herdsmen, saying it is “worrisome and calls for questions as to whether there is indeed a government that actually cares for its people”.
While describing workers’ condition as disheartening, he called on them to gear up to fighting for their rights.
The NLC president said that this year’s Workers’ Day celebration calls for workers to reflect on their struggle so far and be reminded that anything they have gotten so far was through serious struggle.
“This year’s May Day, workers should gear themselves up for many more fight for better working condition and welfare and always be ready to pursue their need at all times as a union. This is because government is not ready to make things better for workers. No worker should expect to get anything from government, employers on a platter of gold. This year’s May Day, is a reminder to all workers to continue the struggle for a better working condition and to be ready to engage employers whenever necessary and always be ready to canvass for better working policy options.”
On the killings by herdsmen, he said; “Protection of life and properties is the primary purpose of government according to our constitution.
No excuses whatsoever is good enough as to why people are being killed everyday in Nigeria and nothing seem to be done about it.”
He called on security agencies to develop a new strategy to secure Nigerians.
“Because with the way Nigerian citizens are being killed by the day, it is worrisome and calls for questions as to whether there is indeed a government that actually care for its people. So we call on them to do the job they are meant to do in the first place,” he added.
