A coalition of nine militant groups in the Niger Delta region under the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA) have attributed the under development in the Niger Delta to the massive looting of the nation’s treasury during the 16 years administration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The RNDA, also noted that though an indigene of the Niger Delta region former President GoodLuck Jonathan was in charge for five years as president, the hope and aspiration of the people of the region was dashed by the alleged massive corruption, looting, favouritism and non-supervision of his appointees which led to large numbers of uncompleted projects in the region.
The leader of the group, Johnmark Ezonebi aka Obama, after a crucial meeting at Benin River, Egbema in Delta State with various agitating militant groups in attendance to appraise the situation in the creeks commended the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari towards the development of the Niger Delta. He warned some PDP leaders and ‘enemies of the region’ to stop frustrating the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government’s efforts to bring development to the region.
According to the RNDA, “We accepted the federal government’s ceasefire agreement in 2016 for dialogue that had led to the remarkable sustained peace process for the development of the region in the wake of renewed destruction and bombing of oil installation and facilities that crippled the nation’s crude oil output which eventually led to recession.
“Most worrisome and painful is the fact that former President Jonathan’s administration goofed on the development of the region as he was unable to complete the road to his Otuoke community while the most corrupt disciples he had in his government were sons and daughters of the Niger Delta. “
He said the militants are pleased with President Buhari’s willingness and commitment to the development of the Niger Delta since he came on board in 2015 in spite of the economic recession that greeted the emergence of his administration.
“President Buhari fight against corruption which was the signpost of the previous PDP administrations had clearly defined his stand on the development of the region, RNDA wants to sincerely commend Mr President for the smooth take off of academic activities of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, and the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, a worthy leader of the South South for the approval for the dredging of the Escravos Warri River at the cost of N13.billion to enable cargo vessels access Warri sea port which will in turn boost economic activities in the Niger Delta and create job for the teeming youths in the Creeks,” he added.
