There was palpable tension in Senate yesterday as Senators became jittery when Senate President Bukola Saraki inaugurated an ad-hoc committee to probe the invasion of the National Assembly by thugs.

The lawmakers and security agents including the police and DSS, are afraid because they do not know who may be found culpable when investigation by the committee is completed.

LEADERSHIP recalls that thugs led by the suspended Senator Ovie Omo – Agege (APC, Delta Central)  had on 18th April, 2018 beat security and invaded the Senate Chamber where they carted away the mace which is symbol of authority in National Assembly.

After the ugly incident, precisely on Tuesday, 23rd  April , 2018, Senators alleged during plenary that some Senators and security operatives connived with the assailants to invade NASS and the Senate consequently  resolved to investigate it.

Yesterday, the Senate and House of Representatives inaugurated a joint committee to ensure the probe of the incident and fish out the cohorts.

The 13 – member committee, comprised of  seven Senators and six members of the House of Representatives is headed by the Deputy Leader of the Senate , Senator Bala Ibn Na’ Allah ( APC Kebbi South).

Inaugurating the committee, Senate President, Bukola Saraki instructed that the panel should live above board and go after the Senator alleged to have aided the invasion, with a view to proffer sanctions.

Saraki said “The events of the 18th of April 2018 will go down as one of the darkest days of our democracy. The precincts of the National Assembly is not just a place where the National Assembly meets, it is the symbol of our liberty and freedom from autocracy and the base of our democracy.

“This should not happen. It should never have happened. The violation of this solemn place, the symbol of our liberty to have a government by the representatives of our people for our people by a group of mobsters and criminals cannot simply be ignored.

“It has been inferred in many quarters that this group of thugs and urchins were led by a serving distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is most despicable and unspeakable.

He further stated, “It is clear and remains the duty of the legislature when faced with behaviours that undermine its fundamental integrity like this one that the legislature acts to restore the integrity of the institution. We owe it as a duty not only to this present National Assembly but also those to precede it, that the legislative process is purged of this dirt and the legislature restored to its full place of dignity.

“This is a duty that must be achieved. We cannot let a precedence proceed from this. Everyone involved from conception to execution of this heinous crime must be brought to book”.

Meanwhile, chairman of the Committee , Senator  Na’Allah has assured that the panel will not compromise to fishing out the persons that aided the invaders. He insisted that those found would be sanctioned unfailingly.

“Distinguished colleagues , Honourable members, our resolve to get to the root of the matter led to the careful selection of the membership of this committee to ensure a thorough investigation into this matter with a view to unraveling the circumstances that led to the invasion of the hallowed senate chamber .In the coming days, those who have responsibility to offer explanations into this matter will appear before the committee,” he said .
