A 19-year-old girl identified as kofo was allegedly shot dead at a polling booth in Ibadan, Oyo State during the Local Government election held yesterday in the state.
The victim was allegedly shot death by officer of the Oyo State command of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) during the local government election in Ibadan on Saturday.
According to a source, the girl was sent on errand to buy drugs at a pharmaceutical store when she met her untimely death.
Our correspondent gathered that the officers were alerted that some hoodlums were fomenting trouble when personnel of the NSCDC stormed the area to quell the crisis.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the girl accidentally shot when the officers were trying to scare away hoodlums at the polling unit.
As a result of the incident, youths in the area mobilized themselves and stormed the divisional office of the NSCDC office at Ekotedo and vandalized their properties.
Effort to get the Oyo State Police Public relations officer, Mr. Adekunle Ajisebutu proved abortive as his phone was unreachable.
The victim who had just finished his West African Examination Council (WAEC), was allegedly shot in the head by gun trotting official of the Nigerian Security Defence Corps.
It was gathered that there was no violence or crisis that would have warranted the killing of the student.
Also, there was heavy presence of armed personnel to ensure law and order in most of the places visited.
The local government election was peaceful, but there was poor turn out of voters.
The state Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and his wife, Florence performed their civic rights at Ward 9, Unit 21 at about 12.30pm in Oluyole Local Government Area of the state.
Governor Ajimobi after casting his vote, expressed optimism that his political party, APC would emerge victorious.
He expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise which was witnessed by both local and international observers.
One of the observers from the human right society, Comrade Friday Maduka gave the electoral process a pass mark, saying that voter turnout in the units was encouraging.
It was gathered that those who participated in the election were the minority wing of Oyo APC.
In most of the polling booths, member of the public avoided the polling centres as if they (the centres) were infected by plagues, while ad-hoc staff members contracted by OYSIEC were serving siestas at the centres.
The effect of this was that once again, people at the grassroots in the state were being deprived of their right to elect those that will govern them at the local councils.
Also reacting to the election, the Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) noted that the OYSIEC which had refused to give candidate of of the party nomination form, had gone ahead to include the name and logo of the party on the ballot paper not only in ibadan South West LGA, the only LGA SPN choose to contest but also across the entire LGA in the state.
The sampled of the ballot paper pasted by SPN member in Ona-Ara Local Government Area showed that the exclusion was deliberate.
“This is because SPN is the only party that is involved in the election without being mobilise to participate by APC. All the other parties under the umbrella of either CNPP or IPAC that are involved in the election were mobilised by APC.
“This is to give an impression that the election itself is participatory. This is why SPN was welcomed by OYSIEC when it first joined the election.
“However, the disposition of the OYSIEC and the Ajimobi-led government suddenly changed to SPN immediately they begin to be threatened by the way and manner SPN consistently questions all of the illegalities being perpetrated by OYSIEC,” the party said.
