President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday flagged off the rehabilitation and completion of 35 years old abandoned Hadejia Irrigation Scheme in Jigawa State which was awarded at the cost of N9.3 billion.
The President who was in Jigawa for a two day working visit arrived the state capital at about 9.58 am and was treated to a reception by the Jigawa and Kano states governors, Alhaji Muhammed Badaru Abubakar and Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, respectively.
The Hadejia irrigation projects known as “Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) project” is financed by World Bank under special intervention for sustainable development of irrigated agriculture in Nigeria.
Contract for the project was awarded this year to CGC-Y Construction Company with completion period of three years. The work comprised the rehabilitation of exiting gravity irrigation area of about 5,346 hectares and expansion of about 778 hectares.
The President also commissioned 114 kilometre road from Guri-Tasheguwa-Abunabo constructed by the state government at the cost of N11 billion.
Speaking at the Emir of Hadejia’s Palace during a courtesy visit to the Emir , Dr Adamu Abubakar Maje, President Muhammadu Buhari expressed disappointment with the manner in which he was prevented from meeting the people directly despite their efforts to see him.
He wondered why he was “enveloped in a dark vehicle” which prevented the large number of people that came to see me from seeing him. “I could also see the disappointment on their faces when they could not even guess the vehicle that conveyed me,” the President noted.
“I hope when I’m going back they would put me in an open vehicle so that my people will see me and I will also wave to them”, he stated.
The President who on arrival in the morning immediately boarded a helicopter that conveyed him to Auyo, was received by large crowd at all the places he visited in the state.
As the Presidential visit enters the second day today, President Buhari is expected to commission more projects executed by the state government, including health and water projects.
