World Cup: Lokosa, Nwankwo Make Eagles’ Provisional Squad

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) leading goal scorer and Kano Pillars goal machine, Junior Lokosa has been named in Super Eagles’ 30-man provisional list for the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup finals.

The Kano Pillars hotshot has scored 18 goals in 20 matches played so far in the current NPFL season – including a brace against Katsina United on Sunday.

His terrific forms in front of goalpost has been rewarded by Super Eagles boss, Gernot Rohr, who included him in his 30-man squad for the Russia 2018 soccer showpiece.

The list, which was made up of regular faces such as Captain John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses, Ahmed Musa, Alex iwobi, William Troost-Ekong and his defensive partner Leon Balogun, also included Crotone of Italy forward, Simeon Nwankwo.

26-year-old Nwankwo gets his first invitation to Super Eagles’ squad thanks to his fine form in the Italian topflight where he has scored six goals in his last seven outings.

Also in the list are Leicester City’s duo of Wilfried Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho, Ogenyi Onazi, Kenneth Omeruo, Olaoluwa Aina, Joel Obi, John Ogu, Moses Simon, Shehu Abdullahi, Elderson Echiejile and China-based Odion Ighalo.

While the likes of recuperated Henry Onyekuru, Kayode Olanrewaju, Brown Ideye, Dele Alampasu, Anthony Nwakaeme and former Golden Eaglets star player, Victor Osimhen were conspicuously missing from the 30-man list released, yesterday, Gernot Rohr stuck with the quartet of Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Dele Ajiboye, Daniel Akpeyi and youngster Francis Uzoho in the goalkeeping department.

All invited players have been are report at the Le Meridien Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo on Monday, May 21.

Nigeria begin their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 16 at the Kaliningrad Stadium before facing Iceland and Argentina on June 22 and 26 respectively.
