Marseille, Atletico Madrid Clash In Europa Cup Final

Atletico Madrid will take on Marseille in the highly anticipated final of the Europa League at the Stade de Lyon today

Atletico will be looking to win their third Europa League trophy, while their French opposition will be hoping to claim their first.

The pair do battle in Lyon with a coveted piece of silverware on the line, and two star-studded strike forces will be on hand in what shapes as an exciting attack-fuelled contest.

Atletico come into the clash as favourites on the back of a slender semi-final victory over Arsenal, although will have to do without the influence of manager Diego Simeone who continues to serve a touchline ban.

It could well be strike superstar Antoine Griezmann’s last game for the club, with Barcelona lurking, and he will partner Diego Costa up front as the La Liga giants bid to win their third Europa crown.

In their way stands a plucky Marseille side who have fought through from the qualifying stage to defy belief largely on the back of the rampant striking qualities of returning stars Florian Thuavin and Dimitri Payet.

Both enjoyed stints in the Premier League before completing come backs to the club, and they’ll be key if Rudi Garcia’s side are to beat the odds to add a Europa League title to the sole Champions League trophy won by the club in 1993.

Payet leads the tournament in assists this season, and his big game experience, alongside that of Luiz Gustavo and Adil Rami will be essential in helping their side step up for the showpiece clash.

Atletico last won the competition in 2012 and will be keen to nab the trophy after returning for the first time since, following a Champions League group stage departure.

A victory would see Diego Simeone’s men make their club the equal most successful club in the competition’s history  drawing level with compatriots Sevilla on 3 titles.
