The minister of Communication Abdulraheem Shittu has called on the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to help halt what he described as “undemocratic happenings in the Oyo State chapter’’ of the party.
In a letter entitled: ‘’Appeal to Save the Soul of APC, Oyo State Chapter” to the leadership of the party and made available to LEADERSHIP in Abuja yesterday, Shittu alleged that the undemocratic actions of Oyo State’s governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has cost the party dearly, as it has lost every election since 2015 in the state.
Shittu said since the governor emergence’s he has alienated the majority of members, stakeholders, and elders of the party and has instead decided to run the party like a fiefdom where only his opinion counts.
He also alleged that Governor Ajimobi has also deliberately usurped the functions of the various organs of the party in the state notably the executive of the party at the various levels. He added that the governor has displayed an aversion for internal democracy and has in its place entrenched a culture of impunity and dictatorship.
‘’You may wish to recall that Governor Ajimobi won his re-election bid In 2015 on the platform of our dear party in 2015 making him the first governor to win a re-election bid since the creation of Oyo State in 1976.
‘’This feat was made possible by the unity of purpose, commitment and resilience on the part of members of the party who cooperated and campaigned vigorously across the nooks and crannies of the state, for him.”
He said rather than allow the wishes of the majority to prevail, the governor is imposing his will on the party without due consultation with party members, elders and stakeholders. He added that the resultant effect of these actions has been the obvious apathy developed by members to the affairs of the party.
The minister said the effect of the governor’s actions is that since the year 2015 when he won his re-election bid on the platform of the party, the party has lost every elective position in Oyo State.
This according to him, is because, the governor, in a bid to impose his hegemony on the party, has always ignored the views of party members and imposed unpopular candidates on the party.
He gave a breakdown of the losses suffered by the party thus; ‘’Furthermore, in his despotic desperation for power, the governor has in some instances shown preference for non-members of the party for the purpose of occupying key positions in government. A case in mind is the election of a new Speaker for the State House of Assembly following the unfortunate demise of the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Michael Adeyemo on 27 April, 2018”.
