Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers, Wednesday killed a popular musician, Mr. Elvis Oni, a.k.a Papa, and wounded his wife in Benin, the Edo state capital.
The armed men numbering about four were said to have stormed the residential building at number 17 New Lagos road, Off Victory junction at about 7:25pm where they first robbed all the occupants in the process.
The gang who adorned face caps and hoods were said to have on arrival dispossessed Mrs. Oni, a food vendor in front of the house, of all proceeds from her sales that yesterday’s evening before proceeding to the backyard.
Other tenants were also dispossessed of cash and other valuables during the robbery operations that lasted for few minutes.
It was gathered the late Oni who doubled as the landlord of the house was locked in discussions with some of his band members when he heard strange footsteps along the passage and had stood up to find out who it was when suddenly the gang shot him instantly at close range.
The deceased musician and his band members as well as the tenants were forced to flee towards the backward following the gunshot.
However, the occupants of the building later returned back from their hidings and had waited without result for hours to see Mr. Oni till the wee hours of the night when everybody went to bed.
The lifeless body was later discovered inside the moat located behind the residential building following a search team made up of all the tenants and his band members.
The wounded wife was later rushed to a private hospital at Ugbowo community in the capital town for treatment.
It was further gathered that both the couple had solemnized their marriage early in the year.
The tragic news of the musician’s death attracted large number of residents, traders at the New Benin market and passersby who thronged the area.
Policemen attached to the New Benin Divisional Station were drafted to the scene at about 9:35am who also took away the corpse to the Central Hospital Benin.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor when contacted yesterday confirmed the incident.
He also denied claimed by residents of rising cases of armed robbery, saying that what is happening is not really case of armed robbery but rival cultism.
He explained that “at about 7pm yesterday (Tuesday) three armed men came into the premises of one Elvis Oni at 17 New Lagos road and shot him. The man escaped through the backward and the wife and children raised an alarm. His body was later found at the moat this morning (yesterday). The police at the New Benin area are still investigating the matter to actually bring the culprits to book. For now no arrest has been made to that effect.”
