Evans’ Counsel, Ogungbeje Withdraws From Trial, Cites “Personal Reasons”

Ahead of the resumption of the trial of suspected billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans on the June 22 before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Lagos State High Court, his lead counsel, Olukoya Ogungbeje has withdrawn from the trial.

Ogungbeje, in letter dated June 13th, which he personally signed, the lawyer said he was withdrawing as lead counsel in all the criminal cases against Evans for “personal reasons”.

The letter reads in part: “For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state categorically that we have fought a good fight this far despite repeated and sustained threats to my life and my defence lawyers.

“For the sake of history, we have been able to enrich the basic principles of our criminal jurisprudence especially the principle premised on ‘An accused person being presumed innocent until the contrary is proved’ no matter the public opinion and criticism,” he stated.

Ogungbeje also pointed out that he and his team has been able to keep the Lagos State Prosecution team on their toes in the art of forensic, proper and thorough investigation and prosecution of the accused persons.

Evans is currently facing five criminal charges before three Lagos High Court judges, Justice Hakeem Oshodi, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo and Justice Adedayo Akintoye.

In the case before Justice Hakeem Oshodi which comes up next week Friday, June 22nd, Evans, Uche Amadi, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi and Victor Aduba are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping of one Mr Donatus Dunu who was the last victim allegedly kidnapped by the group before their arrest in June last year.
