Cholera Outbreak: Niger Govt Confirms 7 deaths, 74 Cases

Niger state government has confirmed 7 people dead in the outbreak of Cholera in Bida local government area,even as 74 cases have so far been reported in the area.

Commissioner of health,Dr Mustapha Jibril disclosed this yesterday in Minna amidst speculations on the outbreak that was reported to have claimed more lives by some section of the media.

The commissioner who was in the area for assessment earlier yesterday said that contrary to the earlier claim that  15 out of 60 reported cases died of the outbreak said that  the death toll was exaggerated .

He stated that the state government acted promptly to avoid recording high casualties with the necessary proactive measures by making sure that all of the cases reported received the desired medical attentions.

According to him, 15 patients are on admission at the Federal Medical Center  and  Umoru Sanda Memorial hospital all in Bida with medical personnel on standby attending to them with the desired attention.

On the cause of the outbreak,Jubril stated that the outbreak was caused by  poor hygiene, even as the state government has dispatched assessment  team to the affected area for further assessment.

He stated that  active case were being  searched  for through  deployment of rapid response clinical team to assist in management of the outbreak, saying that  all hospitals and medical personnel have been put on red alert to check spread.

While assuring that the state government will continue to be on top of the situation, he added  that all infected persons are to be given free treatment as a way for them to receive the needed care.
