The Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, has called on Nigerians, especially teachers, parents and caregivers of children with special needs to show more interest and passion in the plight of the children so as to give them a better future.
She made the call at a training workshop organised by the Aisha Buhari Foundation in partnership with NIKA Foundation, for teachers, health workers and parents on how to handle children with special needs.
Represented by her special adviser, Dr Hajo Sani, she noted that, “the challenges these children face are a reality and there is a way we can come together and resolve it and give these children the special care they need.
She therefore charged teachers at the training to pay attention and go with the modern trend they have learnt and impact such knowledge to address the challenges of these children.
Speaking earlier, the national coordinator, Aisha Buhari Foundation, Dr Mohammed Kamal, said: “In 2016, we had a reason to conduct an assessment. We visited five public schools of children with Special Needs within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) just to have an understanding of how these schools work and some of their challenges.
“After the assessment, we were able to identify some critical gaps that have to do with infrastructure, availability of learning materials and aides, knowledge and skills among the teachers working with these children.”
According to him, for these schools to function effectively and for these children to benefit, training the teachers is crucial.
