21 Savage: “Drake Deserves More Credit For Helping New Artistes”

A stringing together a multitude of bangers including “X,” “Bank Account” and “No Heart” at the early points of his career, 21 Savage began garnering respect from many marquee artists, most notably Drake. In a new profile published by GQ, Savage chats about his relationship with Drizzy and how the self-proclaimed 6 God deserves more recognition for accelerating the careers of new artists.

“He did a lot of shit he didn’t have to do,” Savage says. “He do a lot of shit for up-and-coming rappers, period. I don’t think he get his respect for that. Every fuckin’ year, he pull a new artist up. Ain’t no other artist on his level do that shit.”

When Savage was on the cusp of stardom, Drake snatched him for his record “Sneakin'” in 2016. Later, the pair teamed up for the visuals. Aside from joining forces with Drake for the lavish, lo-fi video, he also was gifted a red Ferrari for his 24th birthday by OVO’s commander-in-chief. “He the only one that got me something for my birthday that year,” Savage told GQ. “Don’t nobody else get me shit but Drake.”

Last year, Savage wreaked havoc on the hip-hop game when he released Issa Album and his acclaimed joint project Without Warning alongside Offset and Metro Boomin. According to Savage — who has been busy on tour with Post Malone — he is currently working on his sophomore album, which “will include R&B elements.”
