Residents of Kubwa Extension 2 (Relocation) in Bwari area council said that they would drag the Nigeria Police, Kubwa division to court for disrupting its planned protest against deadly stone blasting in the community by Zeberced Nigeria Limited.
In an interview with LEADERSHIP at the weekend, chairman of the resident association of the community, Barr Moses Anyaoha said that the police have denied residents of the area their right to protest against the unhealthy stone blasting and its hazardous effect on the residents.
Anyaoha alleged that the residents had gathered at Mountain Fountain Garden, their usual meeting venue, at about 7.30 am, waiting for other members to come out, before commencing their planned protest, only for a team of heavily armed police officers, in three Hilux car to zeroed in on them. According to Anyaoha, the team, which was led by the DPO Csp Ayobami, went on rampage, hitting people with heavy sticks, while ordering his men to shoot and seize phones belonging to residents.
The chairman of the association explained that it was in the ensuing milieu that he was arrested whisked away and detained by the police for no reason, adding that prior to that day, the community had written to notify the police about the protest, with hope that security will be provided to them.
He stated that stone blasting by the company in the area has become as source worry to residents of the area, adding that many houses in the community have cracked because of the blasting.
“When they blast, you can see the vibrations on our buildings. It affects even children in the community. Also, when they blast, it emits dust and the dust affects all of us. You see some of our houses are cracking as a result of the blast. The buildings are falling.”
