The Nigerian Water Supply Association,NWSA has honoured the minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu, with its Grand Patron Award for his maximum cooperation to the association.

The award was presented to him at the first International Conference of the Nigerian Water Supply Association, held in Abuja, yesterday.

The conference, which is themed: “Transforming Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Utilities into Financial Viable Entities”, was declared opened by the minister.

Speaking at the conference, the minister said the purpose of the gathering was to generate maximum results that would complement government’s efforts at improving service delivery in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector.

According to a statement by the Ministry’s director of press, Mrs Kenechukwu Offie, the minister expressed optimism that the desire to provide sustainable water services to the growing population in Africa will be realised through the implementation of action plans with other active organisational sectors.

“It is well known fact that the pathway to be taken to accomplish utility transformation is rough as it cuts through difficult terrains of institutional reform, organisational strengthening, infrastructural development and injection of innovations and proactive response to climatic change

“It is in recognition of these, that the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources has been supporting Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Reform since 2004 and the recently approved National WASH Action Plan, including declaration of State of Emergency for the WASH sector,” it said.

For his part, the President of the NWSA, Dr Eugene Pam, who welcomed guests, said the theme of the conference has been carefully chosen to expose the challenges facing the implementation of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Nigeria.
