The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said the report of the Kano under-aged voting during the last year’s local government election will be published this week.

There were reports last week that the commission will publish the report on its online platform which it failed.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP yesterday, INEC chairman’s spokesman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, said the commission needed to configure its website to accommodate videos that are part of the report.

“The delay in the publication of the Kano State underage voting is because the commission needed to reconfigure the website settings to contain other aspects of the report since there were video details that needs to be included,” Oyekanmi said.

The report as earlier released by INEC raised concern on the integrity of local government elections conduct in the country.

INEC said the underage voting experience in the Kano LGC election was because the State Independent Electoral Commission, Kano – SIECOM did not use it’s voter register.

The commission had setup an investigation committee headed by a National Commissioner, Engr Abubakar Nahuche.

The Nahuche- led committee was made up of another National Commissioner, Barr May Agbamuche-Mbu, two Resident Electoral Commissioners (Barristers Mike Igini and Kassim Geidam) as well as some Directors and staff of the Commission, who were said to be experts in ICT, as members.

Other recommendation by the committee was for INEC to work with the State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) to ensure continuous improvements in the quality of all elections conducted in Nigeria.

“Kano State Independent Electoral Commission requested for and received from INEC the Kano State Register of Voters for the election.”

“The Register was produced for use for the elections. However, the register was only sighted in a few polling units. In other words, the register was not used in most of the polling units. In fact, accreditation using the Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) largely did not take place,” part of the report disclosed.

The report said since the Voter Register was substantially not used to accredits voters, the underage children are not registrants on the INEC Voter Register.
