The president of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Adekunle Mokuolu, has called on the federal and state governments to engage the services of cost engineers and appraisers at inception of any project. He stated that doing so would not only help in reducing the spate of abandoned projects across the country but would equally reduce the tendency of over inflating contracts.
Mokuolu stated this while addressing newsmen during the 2018 National Technical Conference and Induction of members of Institute of Appraisal and Cost Engineers, held in Abuja yesterday.
Speaking on how cost engineers can help save the country perfect its budgetary processes and deliver greater value to citizens, he said, “The only way our budgets can be perfect is to go through the whole process of budget evaluation, you must know the cost of your projects before embarking on it and you must know how you are going fund it and that is why we are saying that the practitioners of cost engineering should report directly to the primary client of the project such as the minister so that they will be like auditors to project executions.” The involvement of cost engineers he stated, would stop the spate of unserviceable projects as well as reduce cost overruns and even abandoned projects.
He blamed the government for allowing foreign engineers to continue to dominate every aspect of the nation stressing engineering is global profession that can be exported to generate income for the country.
