The new leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has declared that it’s a new dawn in the student’s body as it will allow itself be used by politicians for selfish motives even as the 2019 general elections draws closer.
The position of NANS was made at a press briefing by the new executive of the students’ body Wednesday in Abuja.
The newly elected president of NANS, Comrade Obande Gideon Obande, said the convention that brought on board the new leadership was almost hijacked by politicians who wanted to used the body for their selfish interest rather than helping the lots of Nigerian students.
Obande stated that NANS will not be partisan in its activities across the nation but will continue to resist intimidation of students in all higher institutions in the country.
“We will not be partisan but will stand for the Nigerian students even as we pledge to work with governments to see new changes in the education sector of the country,” he said.
Obande lamented the poor budgetary provisions for education sector and urged the federal and state governments to move away from the single digit budget for education.
He also warned that all forms of students intimidation, harassment on campuses will be resisted by NANS.
The NANS president called on students across the country to be law abiding and shun all vices for the good of the nation and their institutions while studying hard to succeed in their programmes.
