The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved the sum of N304 million as 2016/2017 scholarship award for about 20,195 students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The secretary, FCTA Education Secretariat, Isah Maina, who announced this when he distributed scholarship letters to some deserving students in Abuja yesterday, explained that the beneficiaries were selected from each of the 10 wards in the six area councils of the FCT.
Many of the beneficiaries, he added, were picked from the hard-to-reach rural communities of the FCT, in line with the directives of the FCT minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello’s directive that the scholarship policy should go down to the grassroots.
“The beneficiaries of this scholarship award are particularly those living in the rural areas. The FCTA has realised that every year, it spends about N300m and above on scholarship, but unfortunately, those who are hard-to-reach, because they live in the tick rural areas, have not been benefiting, even though they are part of FCT.
‘The issue here is however, based on the directive of the FCT minister that the scholarship policy go down to the grassroots. That is why we picked the beneficiaries from each of the 10 wards of the FCT to fill the forms, so as to benefit from the scholarship award.”
While calling on rural dwellers in the FCT to take advantage of the policy and support the administration, the education secretary also noted that education is very important in the development of the territory.
