The National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba on Tuesday tasked the Ekiti state governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi not to renege on his electioneering campaign promises of prompt settlement of workers’ backlog of salaries.
Wabba observed that one of the major factors that worked against the outgoing government in the state during the July 14th governorship election was its failure to offset the more than six -month salary arrears and pensions owed workers.
The NLC president noted that workers everywhere would always tilt towards the direction of any government who took their welfare as priority, stressing that they are the ones that create the wealth.
Wabba spoke in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital during the official commissioning of the ultra-modern hall built by the leadership of the Ogun State council of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) led by Comrade Akeem Adeosun.
“I want to congratulate the incoming governor. INEC played a very important role, I think that will help our politics in the future. I can see that one issue that played out is that the workers and pensioners in the state have not been paid salaries for the past six to eight months.
“What happened in Ekiti is that workers will no longer be maltreated. Fayemi should address the workers’ plight by fulfilling his promises and off-setting the salary arrears.”
The NLC President, who commended the NURTW in Ogun state for the foresight of venturing into such additional revenue generating property however, called on governments at all levels to ensure solid partnership with workers in the transportation sector towards ensuring rapid development of the nation’s economy.
He emphasised that despite the deplorable conditions of Nigerian roads, workers at the transportation sector have continued to discharge their duties of ferrying goods and passengers from one location to another, thereby moving the wheels of the economy forward.
“I can say that in the informal sector, the NURTW is one of the best organised unions and it will continue to contribute immensely to the economy of this country because the movement of goods and services is key to the economy”.
“Despite the challenges and the state of our roads, this union shall continue to use their members to transport form one place to another. This cannot be quantified”.
Wabba however, charged the NURTW members to continued towards working for peace in all their parks across the nations and desist from capable destabilising the peace already achieved within the last seven years of the Ibikunle Amosun led administration in the state.
In his address, the National President of NURTW, Comrade Najeem Yasin, who also commended the union for the “unprecedented” feat, also appealed to members not to allow themselves to be used as political thugs in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.
