The chairman, FCT Council, Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), Paul Ella Abechi has disclosed that his administration remain committed to building the capacity of journalist and reawakening the spirit of sportsmanship amongst them.
Speaking exclusively to LEADERSHIP during second edition of the NUJ FCT Council-Chinese Journalists Table Tennis Tournament in Abuja Abechi said that beyond reporting news stories, journalist need to emulate the spirit of sportsmanship by encompassing virtues such as fairness, self-control, courage, and persistence.
He said this concept has been associated with interpersonal concepts of treating others and being treated fairly, maintaining self-control if dealing with others, and respect for both government and opponents.
He averred that as part of the council’s continuous effort to build the capacity for journalists, the union in collaboration with the United State Government recently sponsored seven journalists to attend the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) in the US, while five others where sponsored by the Government of the People’s Republic of China to attend the Seminar of Manager of International Media Organisation of African Countries.
He maintained that collaborating with the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, is an indication that the FCT Council of NUJ is ready to take journalism in the territory to the next level in line with best global practices.
“Our programmes and policies so far have been designed to empower journalists and to separate the wheat from the chaff as a means of providing the needed services in the arena of journalism.
“We have so far been putting efforts in ensuring that the bad eggs in journalism are fished out to give the needed credibility to the practice in adhering strictly to the ethics of the profession.”
Mr Abeshi reiterated that, apart from the health benefits that comes with sport of this nature, the tournament, the Council is hoping will be of economic benefits in the future. He promised that the Council will sustained the tournament.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Tokunbo Adesanya emerged the winner of the men’s category.
In the female category, Kisit Golit of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) defeated her Chinese counterpart, Haiji Jiang, 2-0 to emerge as champion.
