FG Urged To Use Abacha Loot To Build More Health Facilities

A member of the Cross River State House of Assembly  representing Ogoja state constituency, Hon Peter Odey, has pleaded with federal government to channel the recovered  $322 million from the late head of state, General Sani Abacha to build the ailing health facilities across the country.

The lawmaker made the call in Ogoja at the weekend, while reacting to the news that the federal government had disclosed that the newly repatriated $322m (approximately N116bn) loot stashed in Swiss banks by the late military dictator, will be shared among the poor households in the country.

The lawmaker is of the strong opinion that the Abacha loot should be adequately deployed for the revival of our ailing medical facilities which entails training & retraining of our medical personnel, infrastructural development of more health centres and equipping the existing ones to meet the up with international standards and best practices.

Hon.Odey said the money could also be used to revive major teaching hospitals in the country which had gone moribund so that jobs could be created, “a better way of solving poverty.”

He said, “the health sector is one of the paramount sectors of the economy which requires urgent state of emergency in the country. Provision and development of more health facilities with the loot will lubricate the sector because health is wealth”.

It would be recalled that the Special Adviser to the President on Social Investment, Mrs. Maryam Uwais had said last week the disbursement of the Abacha loot to the poor would start in July.
