The Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Hajia Aisha Abubakar, has expressed optimism that the implementation of the Nigeria Agribusiness and Agro-Industry Development Initiative (NAADI) would bring about sustained poverty reduction, human capital development and prosperity to the majority of Nigerians.
Speaking at the flag-off and official commissioning of Kano zonal office for the implementation of the initiative, Hajia Aisha Abubakar represented by the permanent secretary of Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment, Edet Akpan, stated further that NAADI would facilitate the achievement of productive and profitable value chains as well as greater agribusiness participation in domestic and international markets.
Abubakar bemoaned the nation’s dependence on the importation of manufactured products which over the years runs into several billions of dollars annually. This trend, according to her, has affected the required value-chain linkage between agriculture and the industry which has not allowed the country to move its agricultural products to industrial level for the final production of finished goods, products and equipment.
She explained that the major objective of NAADI was to develop an industrialised and commercialised agriculture sector comprising highly productive and profitable commodity value chains with a view to accelerating the growth and diversification of the economy into high value products.
Abubakar disclosed that NAADI coordinating offices have been established in Akure, Bauchi, Uyo, Owerri, Sokoto adding that Kano Zonal office which is the latest addition, and would be centered on textiles and garments, hides and skin, livestock, fisheries, rice, sesame, groundnuts, tomato and pepper.
The director, Commodities and Products Inspectorate Department of Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment, Mrs Omololu Opeewe, in an interview at the event, declared that NAADI has the potential of making Nigeria exporter of manufactured products instead of being mere supplier of raw materials.
