Borno Politician Detained Over Role In Murder At His Residence – Police

The Borno State police command said it arrested the former chairman of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency ( SEMA) and a gubernatorial candidate for the 2019 election in Borno, Grema Terab, over his role in offences of homicide, inciting disturbances, and sundry other offences that occurred at his residence on April 15, this year.

The police added that three months after a political supporter was murdered in Terab’s home during a political gathering which the police warned him not to hold in his residence, the politician fled the state. Since then, every effort to get him to explain his role in the murder failed until his arrest a few days ago, at the stakeholders meeting of the former vice president, Atiku Abubakar and PDP members in Maiduguri, where he was picked up.

A statement signed and issued to newsmen in Maiduguri on Friday by the Borno State commissioner of police, Mr Damian Chukwu, said contrary to the report on the page 42 of the Nation’s Newspaper of July 19, which was captioned “Aspirant Held,” Chukwu said the police never did so.

Further describing the report as false, Chukwu noted that the wife of the politician was never pregnant too and so did not lose any pregnancy, saying that the report was a falsehood meant to hoodwink unsuspecting members of the public.

“The attention of Borno State Police Command has been drawn to a media report on page 42 of The Nation Newspaper of Thursday, July 19, 2018, captioned ‘Aspirant Held.’

“The command wishes to state categorically that, while it is true that one Alhaji Grema Terrab has been arrested over his role in the offences of culpable homicide, inciting disturbances and sundry other offences which occurred at his residence on April 15, 2018, most of the claims in the report under reference are false in its entirety.

“It is worthy of note that the said Alhaji Grema on April 15, 2018, organised a political event at his residential quarters, contrary to security advice by the police. Expectedly, the meeting attracted a large crowd of people. In the course of the event, and right inside his residential premises, one Maina Mustapha Babagana, a 20-year-old welder was stabbed to death by persons present at the event.

“Contrary to reports in the above quoted newspaper, Alhaji Grema Terrab never showed up at the GRA police Station or the Command Headquarter to report the incident. Neither did he honour series of invitations to him by the police. Rather, he went into hiding. He was accordingly declared wanted after due process.

“On getting wind of the heinous crime at the said residence, the police swung into action, mobilised to the scene, evacuated the corpse which was still lying in a pool of blood in the compound, took it to Borno State Specialist Hospital mortuary and invited those present at the scene of the crime for questioning.

“While in police custody on April 16, 2018, one Saadatu Mohammed Ali, who was also at the scene of crime, fell ill and was taken to Umaru Shehu Ultramodern Hospital, Maiduguri for treatment. The result of the various tests and scans indicated a normal-sized anteverted empty uterus and did not indicate any complication or miscarriage as alleged in the media reports.

“On Tuesday, July 17, 2018, Alhaji Grema Terrab was sighted during a political visit of the former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, in Maiduguri. He was accordingly arrested by the police so that he can answer to the allegations leveled against him. He has also been charged to court.’’

“I wish to inform members of the public that Borno State police command under my leadership is an unbiased and law abiding institution and will continue to discharge its duties according to the dictates of the law. I urge the general public to ignore false reports aimed at tarnishing the image of the force,” he said.
