The senator representing Borno South, Sen Ali Ndume, has commended the Presidential Committee on North East Initiatives (PCNI) for allocating 20 trucks of fertiliser to be distributed freely to farmers in his constituency to boost food production.
Ndume, who made the commendation while flagging off the distribution yesterday in Gamadadi, Bayo LGA, Borno State, urged the farmers to use the commodity to boost food production and improve the socio-economic development of the state.
The senator, said agriculture is the major source of livelihood of almost every family in his constituency, hence the need for the gesture. He then urged his constituents to ensure that th8e use the commodity for the purpose for which it was meant for.
He also made it clear that the commodity will be distributed in accordance with a template designed by him to ensure that it reaches all stakeholders and interest groups across the constituency.
Senator Ndume, while commending the people of his constituency for their support and solidarity over the years, appealed to them to continue to support him and the All Progressives Congress (APC’s), administration at all levels to enable them enjoy more dividends of democracy.
In his address, the chairman of PCNI, Gen Theophilus Danjuma(rtd) who was represented by Prof. Hauwa Biu, said the free fertilizer distribution was part of the committee’s initiative in assisting communities ravaged by the attacks of insurgents, noting that they are convinced that the free fertiliser would help farmers get bounty harvest during the farming season.
She said farming and its activities must be encouraged and intensified more than ever in view of the dwindling trend in other sector of the nation economy.
While making a case for women to be well captured in the distribution pattern, Professor Hauwa urged unemployed women and youths to consider going into agriculture to improve their economic wellbeing and that of their families.
Some stakeholders who spoke during the event thanked the Senator for his decision to put smiles on the faces of rural farmers and pledged for their support in his future endeavors.
