Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has expressed joy over today’s defection of members of the National Assembly, elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The governor, who declared that the mass defection an indication that democracy is now taking shape in the country, said the development shows the direction the country is headed in 2019.
Wike spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt, during the celebration of 40 years of legal practice of former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chief. Onueze Okocha, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) by Okpo Club of Nigeria, an association of lawyers from Ikwerre ethnic nationality.
He said: “Democracy is taking shape in Nigeria. I hope you are aware that the PDP has taken over the Senate. We are like going to take over at the House of Representatives.”
The governor stated that all Nigerians must continue to work towards a development-oriented government for the country next year.
Wike described the club’s honour to Okocha, who is a former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Rivers State, as well deserved.
He said: “This is 40 years of successful law practice. I commend Chief OCJ Okocha for mentoring young lawyers to be worthy legal practitioners”.
Speaking at the occasion, Chief Barinua Moses Wifa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said the former NBA President deserves the honour because he is a bridge between old and young lawyers.
Also speaking former Rivers State Governor, Sir Celestine Omehia said Okocha is a living icon who has contributed to the development of the state.
In his remarks, Okocha, who said he will remain committed to the promotion of access to justice and the rule of law, assured that he will continue to join other lawyers and members of the bench to enhance the Independence of the Judiciary.
He stated that he will always serve as an inspiration to others to join the legal profession.
