For causing bodily harm on a five year old girl, a middle aged woman simply identified as Rahmatu has been apprehended by the Police in Kaduna yesterday.
The young girl who was staying with the woman at Angwan Dosa in Kaduna North local government area of Kaduna State was accused of defecating on her bed following a running stomach and was beaten blue black with severe damage caused to her eyes.
Investigation revealed that, the girl had unconsciously defecated on her bed after she was given three tablet of flagil by her aunt who claimed to be a nurse with a private hospital (name withheld) when the little girl complained of a running stomach.
Further investigation revealed that, the girl, Zainab (not her real name) was sometimes ago brought from Maiduguri, Borno State by the same woman that inflicted physical injuries on her.
It was gathered that it was a worried neighbour who alerted a non-governmental organisation called Umukhail Foundation who rushed to the house to rescue the girl and then drew the attention of the State’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development (MWASD).
When contacted, Commissioner, MWASD, Hajiya Hafsat Baba, who confirmed the development said, the girl had been treated at Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital, Kaduna and now in safe custody pending the time her father will come from Maiduguri, Borno State.
According to the commissioner, “when we got the report from a non-governmental organisation this morning, fortunately there are some security personnel on ground who went to the house and arrested the lady and her husband.
“Her husband was arrested because he watched his wife did that to the small girl. If found guilty, he will become an accomplice punishable under the new Child Welfare and Protection Law of Kaduna State.
“immediately they brought the girl, I took her to Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital here in Kaduna for medical examination and treatment because she may be having internal injury.
“She has been treated and examined and she is now in safe custody pending the time her father will come from Maiduguri.
“Presently, the woman that did that to her is in police custody in Kawo together with her husband. We hope the girl will get justice because the woman will be charged to court after investigation.
“This will serve as deterrent to others and remind the people that, the child protection law in Kaduna state is in force and implementation has commenced”, she added.
