It was a black Friday, as unknown gunmen, suspected to be assassins, in the early hours of yesterday, murdered Sunny Ejiagwu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in Ideato North Local Government of Imo State.
Ejiagwu, who is popularly known as Ohaneze, was one of the 27 local government chairmen inaugurated on Monday by the new state chairman, Dan Nwafor, after the state APC rescheduled election as ordered by the court.
The state commissioner of police (CP), Dasuki Galandanchi, confirmed the murder when contacted on phone by our correspondent, saying that the corpse had been evacuated to the mortuary.
The CP said that the politician was killed along the Akokwa road in the Ideato North local government area of the state.
The CP said, “The APC chairman in Ideato North, Ejiagwu, has been murdered. I was at the scene of the crime and only came back very late while his corpse has been evacuated to a mortuary.
“There is no preliminary suspicion but the investigator would find out as the blood of the innocent would expose those who committed the dastardly act.”
Speaking with newsmen at the state party secretariat, the new APC state chairman, Dan Nwafor, said that the killing was condemnable.
He said that political killings and violence have no place in a democracy and called on security agencies to fish out those behind the evil act.
Nwafor said, “My attention was called to the killing of one of the local government chairmen of our party. Sunny Ejiagwu, until his death, was the APC chairman in Ideato North.”
“The killing is condemnable because APC preaches peace and political tolerance, people should play politics without bitterness and violence.
“The constitution of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria guarantees freedom of association”.
“We therefore call on the inspector general of police to press on the commissioner of police to nab the culprits. Imo is a peaceful state and an example of how politics should be played.
“The deceased was in our meeting on Thursday and he expressed concern about political violence in his area. He also told us that his area is volatile and called on us to come to his rescue when the need arose.
“This is a sad development in our political process, we call on Nigerians to condemn political killings and violence as it does no one any good”.
“From the information made available to me, he was double crossed and when he tried to move back, he fell into the gutter and his killers went there and shot him severely.”
Meanwhile, the governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, yesterday, promised
the sum of N20 million for anybody that would give useful information that could lead to the arrest of the killers of Chief
Sunny Ejiagwu, the Ideato-North Local Government Area APC Chairman.
He directed the police and other security agencies in the state, to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those behind the ungodly act are brought to book without delay.
The governor stressed that the killing was purely a case of mindless assassination, looking at the circumstances of the killing.
His words, “Considering the fact that nothing was taken away from the man or removed from his car, it should not have been therefore a case of armed robbery, and looking too at the fact that there was no sign of resistance or struggling between the killers and the victim and the method of shooting, the issue of kidnapping should also be ruled out”.
“The man’s head and body were shattered with bullets following several gunshots just to make sure that he had no chance of being revived, and that could only be done by wicked assassins.”
Governor Okorocha spoke when political and community leaders of Ideato-North came to officially inform him about the gruesome murder of Ejiagwu, at the Government House, Owerri.
He assured that the killers of the man, popularly known as “Ohaneze”, would soon be apprehended and be made to face the consequences of their wicked act.
“Last night, we received a very disturbing news about the untimely death of one of our party leaders in Ideato-North by name Sunny Ejeagwu (Ohaneze), who was murdered at about 8.00pm last night. We have come to a very painful moment of this our political life, to say that those who are behind the killing must be brought to book.
“This is painful and Ohaneze has no reason to die now. He has just been elected chairman of APC, Ideato-North and he is one that is loved by all, but for someone to have taken his life, we condemn it in its entirety and we have requested the security agencies to fish out the killers. We, as a government, must ensure that these
culprits, these wicked souls, must be brought to book. We must never allow innocent souls to be destroyed or even people to be killed just for nothing.”
