Former Clerk of the National Assembly (CNA) Dr. Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa, has given students and youths a ten point agenda to guide them whenever they want to actively participate in politics.
He gave the advice in an opening remarks at a lecture organized by the Nasarawa state students of the university of Abuja titled “Youth Participation in Politics” held at the main campus of the university Gwagwalada yesterday.
Dr. Maikasuwa advised them not to regard politics as a stepping stone for being rich but rather as a means for contributing positively to the development of the nation and uplifting the status of the common man.
According to him, it was wrong for anybody to measure his success in life based on his richness but rather on what positive contributions you are making to human beings.
He said one of the most important lessons they should also learn is to be a hardworking, tolerant and transparent leader who could propagate proper values in whatever situation he finds himself.
Dr. Maikasuwa who had cited a recent statement made by the France President Emmanuel Macron urging youths to be involved in politics had warned against God-fatherism which he said, could be detrimental to the society.
He also advised them to shun tribalism and religious extremism in their activities as leaders of tomorrow who are expected to take the mantle of leadership of moving this country to the next level.
Maikasuwa who is a visiting lecturer at the University of Nasarawa urged the youths to always be humble and respectful and also to avoid being arrogant in their interactions with the public. He said, at all cost violence must be avoided and that politics is just a matter of choice.
In his opening remarks Chairman of the Student’s Union had said, Maikasuwa has for over 30 years now been assisting students in various ways especially in their academic pursuits.
Also speaking at the occasion the head of the Sociology department of the university, Prof. Suleiman urged the youths to rise up to the occasion of fighting in the interest of the common man and the progress of the nation.
