The Rivers State Police command has launched investigation into a boat mishap that claimed no fewer than 16 people along the Port Harcourt-Bakana waterways last Saturday.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the passenger boat was travelling from the Abonnema Wharf in Port Harcourt to Banana community in Degema local government area of the state when the accident occurred.

Police public relations officer (PPRO) in the state, Omoni Nnamdi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who spoke to newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday, said the Marine Police Division has launched investigation into the accident.

Omoni said, “Efforts are still on to get the missing persons. I can confirm the incident of yesterday where we recorded a boat mishap and some persons are feared dead and some have been rescued. That is the true position.

“Men of the Marine Police are investigating the boat mishap. The boat driver is helping us.”

Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Degema constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Farah Dagogo, has condoled with the families of those who lost loved ones in last weekend’s ill fated boat mishap in Bakana community.

Dagogo in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday, expressed deep sadness over the unfortunate incident, which he termed  a huge tragedy.

The lawmaker said, “I am deeply saddened by the news of this huge tragedy. It is more painful that majority of lives lost in the boat mishap were in their prime who no doubt would have contributed immensely to the development and growth of Degema and Rivers State at large.

“I pray the Almighty to grant the bereaved families the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. May He also the families the strength and the comfort that will see them through this very difficult and trying times.”
