The Borno State Hunters Association has assured that it will synergise with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in Borno to bring the activities of the Boko Haram terrorists in Borno and environs to an end.
To this end , the hunters issued a notice to the members of the Boko Haram insurgents still in the bush to lay down their arms and surrender for peace, warning that business will henceforth not be as usual following their absorption into the theartre of the war against their activities.
The organising secretary of the Borno Hunters Association,Salisu Durukangiya who stated this yesterday while on a courtesy call to the General Officer Commanding ( GOC) 7 Division of the Nigerian Army , Brigadier General Abdulmalik Bulama Biu, at the Maimalari cantonment in Maiduguri, regretted that they were neglected in the past despite their vast knowledge of the terrains the insurgents were operating .
Durukangiya noted that if given the necessary support in addition to the provision of logistics by the Army and government at all levels, terrorism will become history in Borno and other parts of Northeast.
He recalled how hunters were used by Adamawa government in routing the terrorists out of the nooks and crannies of the state which ushered in the peace enjoyed there, adding that in the past when armed robbers were terrorising some parts of Borno state, it was hunters that were used to bring the incessant attacks to an end.
“ This is a great opportunity that we have been so far looking for. We are conversant with forest , especially the Sambisa forest and others which have been our area of hunting for over 100 years before the coming of Boko Haram insurgency. Some of us inherited it from our parents, and we have mastery of the terrians.
“ We thank God for the GOC, a son of the soil, who has recorgnised our strength and decided to include us in the theatre of the war.
We are going to give him every support to ensure that Boko Haram is defeated and peace returned in Borno and Northeast in general.
“ We have over 20,000 members and the assurance we are giving today is that the days of Abubakar Shekau and his cohorts are numbered as we are going to invade every nook and cranny in the forests and smoke them out. So we are calling on them to lay down their arms and embrace peace,”Durukangiya said.
Appreciating the visit of the hunters to the Division, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Abdulmalik Bulama Biu said the Army and the hunters were able to discuss some of the support and collaboration needed , noting that the war against Insurgency is a business where everybody must be involved.
