Leadership Nigeria News Today

A Sri Lankan man accused of war crimes is being detained in Germany, Prosecutors in the Western City of Karlsruhe said on Thursday.

The 36-year-old man, identified only as Sivatheeban B under Germany’s strict privacy laws, is believed to have ties with a Tamil Rebel Group

He is accused of taking part in the killing of 16 soldiers who were taken prisoners during Sri Lanka’s civil war.

He was allegedly standing watch in 2008 as the shackled soldiers were taken to their site of execution before they were then shot.

The man is said to have been a member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebel group between 2006 and 2009.

For 26 years, Sri Lanka was ravaged by a conflict involving rebels of the LTTE, who were fighting for an independent homeland for minority Tamils.

More than 40,000 civilians were reported killed in the conflict’s final stages.

The army defeated the rebels in 2009.

Federal prosecutors said the man, who was arrested on Wednesday, was ordered held in pre-trial detention by a local judge on Thursday.
