NASS Invasion: Osinbajo’s Prompt Action Saved Nigeria’s Democracy- Abubakar

The prompt action taken by Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo in intervening in the siege of the National Assembly (NASS) last week, saved Nigeria’s democracy, former chief security officer to former Military President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, Major Abubakar Adamu Muhammad (rtd) has said.

Muhammad who spoke with newsmen in his office in Kaduna said the siege on the National Assembly was not just on an arm of government but was a siege on the entire nation.

He said the intervention by the Acting President however redeemed the image of Nigeria in the eyes of the international community and restored democracy in Nigeria.

The former CSO to Babangida said, “The western world will now look at us and say we are now practicing democracy” adding that the sacking of the former Director General of the Department of State Security (DSS) was the right thing to do.

He said, “It was the right thing to do and putting him under arrest was the best as he became so powerful and being so powerful can create a problem and that was what led to the sealing of the National Assembly in the first place.”

Muhammad, who also spoke on the lingering problem of insurgency in Nigeria said it has persisted because there is no cooperation between the various arms of the armed forces.

“If there’s that synergy between the army, the navy and air force this thing would have gone, but in Nigeria the three do not seem to agree and as long as there is this problem, it will continue,” he added.
