Oyo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Bimbo Kolade has charged vice – chairmen of Local Government councils in the state to be agent of positive change.

The commissioner while speaking at a one-day induction and capacity building programme, urged them to take advantage of available resources in their localities for overall development of the state.

The programme was organised by the ministry for the newly elected vice – chairmen in the local governments and local council development areas of the state in Ibadan.

He explained that the motive of the workshop was to equip the vice – chairmen with ethic of governance, establish mutual relationship among colleagues and create synergy among grassroots functionaries to promote good governance in their council areas.

”Let me congratulate you for being part of history in Oyo State as an elected vice chairman. I urge you to be loyal to your boss, build cordial relationship with the legislators and be alive with your responsibilities in order to take the state to greater heights,” he said.

He stressed that efforts were ongoing to create portfolios to office of the vice chairmen to make them more effective.

While reiterating the importance of good governance at grassroots, Kolade enjoined them to make themselves accessible and promptly attend to issues affecting members of their council areas.

The guest speaker, chairman, Conference of Head of Local Government Administration in Oyo State, Mr. Adewale Jimoh and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Barrister A. W. Gbadegesin , represented by Director Of Litigation in the ministry,  I.O Tijani, emphasised the need for the vice chairmen to be  diplomatic in taking decisions and act in accordance with conducts acceptable by all and sundry.

The duo who spoke on “Ethics and Ethical Violations for Public Office Holders  and The Role of Local Government Vice – Chairmen in a Presidential System: Perspectives of Law and Politics”, respectively  admonished  participants not to engage in acts that are contrary to the stipulated laws guiding local government administration in the state.

Also speaking after the workshop, the vice – chairman, Soro Local Council Development Area, Oyo, Hon. Alaka Kabiru, vice-chairman, Ibarapa North Local Government, Hon. Ojegoke Abdul – Lateef and His Egbeda Local Government counterpart, Hon. Olufemi Aliu appealed to the government to create a platform for dialogue between the chairmen and vice-chairmen with a view to exposing both parties to their constitutional rights and duties for effective service delivery.
