Fake, expired and unwholesome products worth over N464 Million, seized from the North eastern states of Nigeria were on Thursday, destroyed by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC) in Gombe.
Sabo Adamu, the north east zonal coordinator of NAFDAC, who represented the Director General Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, at the destruction site said the destruction of the drugs was to prevent the devious people involved from making further inventions of such products into the society and also prevent the re-introduction of such products into the society.
“The destruction of these products will no doubt eliminate the risk of their reintroduction in the Nigerian market.” He said.
According to him, “some of the products destroyed include tramadol capsules and tablets, codeine, diazepam tablets, analgen injection, medik-55, sexual enhancement drugs, substandard, fake and falsely labelled medicines.”
Other products also destroyed include unwholesome food products, cosmetics and other counterfeited unsafe NAFDAC regulated products, such as Spaghetti, vegetable oil and non-alcoholic beverages.
Adamu stated that some of the destroyed products were seized while others were handed over to NAFDAC voluntarily by compliant companies, NGOs, trade unions, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) and National Association of Proprietary and Patent Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED).
The DG said the agency has been re-positioned to fight the menace of drug counterfeiting through proactive approach by engaging political, traditional and religious leaders in sensitising their members, subjects and congregation respectively.
While reiterating the agency commitment in the fight against counterfeit, fake drugs and unwholesome food products, the agency appeal to government at state level to establish drug abuse control committee comprising of NAFDAC and relevant agencies to address the menace.
“The committee is to prevent the proliferation of drug of abuse and psychotropic substances among the youth in addition to creating other activities that would reduce and eliminate drug abuse in the states.”
Adamu commended other government agencies like the Police Force, Nigeria Custom Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Consumer Protection Council (CPC), Standard Organization of Nigeria, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), among others, for their support.
LEADERSHIP reports that the destruction was witnessed by representatives of the state government, traditional council, Police, DSS, NDLEA, SON, PSN and other relevant stakeholders.
