Lagos Airport Cleaner Who Returned Lost N32m Cries Out Over Empty Promises

Josephine Ugwu, a former cleaner at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Ikeja, that found and returned several millions of naira while on duty, has called on individuals and state governors who made pledges to her, to redeem their pledges.

In a chat with LEADERSHIP recently, Ugwu, who was working as a cleaner with Patoviki at the airport, explained that various state governments that promised her rewards have reneged on their promises.

According to her, while she returned N12m found at the airport to the owner, she was given N5, 000 by a third party and didn’t see the owner of the money. She added that the owner of the money she found in Enugu gave her N2, 000.

She however commended members of the Lagos State House of Assembly for bestowing an award on her, even as she lamented that the promise they made, which was to name a street after her and provide a house for her, has not been met either.

Ugwu explained that the administration of Governor Babatunde Fashola, during a farewell party organised in May 2015 for the former governor by the Lagos government, assured her that the incoming administration of would address the matter. But since they came to power, Ugwu noted that she has not been able to reach them.

“I use this opportunity just to remind them, I’m not forcing them because they have done something for me. I am from Enugu and they also promised to name a street after me, since then nothing has been done. But I was told the governor has given approval but nobody has called to inform me.”

“Some of them took my phone number and promised to call me for a reward but no one has called, but I am happy.”

In 2006 in Enugu, Ugwu found and returned N10. 2m. then in 2014, she also found and returned N7. 3m and 3.6m in Lagos while she equally returned N12m in 2015.
