Legal Practitioner, Rights-activist Drags FG, IGP To Court Over SARS

On Monday, a Legal Practitioner and Rights Activist, Barr. Oleka Udenze dragged the Federal Government and the Inspector General of Police to The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja seeking an Order of Mandamus to compel the respondents to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

This suit according to him has become necessary in the light of reports of continued harassments, illegal detention, kidnapping, extortion, brigandage, torture, extrajudicial killings by officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

He contented amongst other things that what Nigerians are asking for is the total disbandment of SARS which has outlived its usefulness, not the “overhaul” as directed by the Federal Government. In his words “when a building is faulty at the foundation, it is a fundamental issue which no amount of renovation or overhaul will remedy the defect. You have to go back to the roots and start over again”.

He hopes the Judiciary will do needful so the FG can start something fresh with the right ideals and orientation”

No date has been fixed for hearing.
