Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has applauded the federal government and other critical stakeholders for intervening in the lingering NFF crisis that saved Nigeria from a suspension. Threat by the world soccer governing body FIFA.

The body in a communiqué issued at the end of its NEC meeting held in Abuja, yesterday, called for pro-active moves towards securing permanent solution to the age-long challenges that have bedeviled football development in the country, and also prescribed same for Basketball, Athletics and other Sport Federations enmeshed in crisis.

The body however, cautions its members against relegating Journalism to the willing tool in the hands of sports administrators for selfish ends and recommended a “solution providing” approach and development-oriented reporting as critical stakeholders in sports promotion.

NEC also commended the moves by the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports to stage the National Sports Festival after six years and advocated the sustenance and timely hosting of the festival; just as it implores the organizers of the forthcoming National Youth Games slated for Ilorin, Kwara State to involve sports journalists in the planning and execution of the events.

The body while also congratulating Nigeria’s contingent to the recently concluded African Youth Games in Algeria for a brilliant performance and implored the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports to groom victorious athletes at the event for future international engagements,  frowns at the pains its members under the sponsorship of the Nigeria Football Federation were made to undergo during the last World Cup in Russia and advised the Federation to ensure that such development does not occur in future.

The association accepted the resignation of its Secretary-General, Mr Olawale Alabi due to the exigencies of his primary duties and wished him well in his future endeavor, and sustained the suspension of its Deputy Secretary-General, Mr Wale Joseph, for anti-SWAN activities pending the outcome of a committee set-up to investigate him.

NEC congratulated Governor Nyesom Wike for emerging the first African Power of Sports recipient following his contributions to sports development in Africa and commended him for sponsoring ten members of SWAN to cover the recently concluded FIFA World Cup in Russia.
