Voter registration in Delta State has become difficult as eligible voters now keep night vigil at registration centres to get registered.

Eligible voters who spoke to our reporter said following the frustration trailing the ongoing voter registration in the state, they now set out as early as 4am to the registration centres for the exercise.

They acknowledged that going to centres at such odd hour is a big risk, and as such called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do something to save the situation.

A housewife, Mrs. Amaka Moses told our reporter at the centre located at the Oshimili South Government Secretariat that the registration officers in synergy with a security guard have allegedly corrupted the exercise as they collect money from people before registration.

In the same vein, Mr. Francis Okorie, a civil servant said he had gone for registration more than four times without success.

He said in two of such occasions, he was at the centre at about 4am to write his name on the list of people for the day, but when it got to 45, his number, the officials said they were through with 52 people they registered for the day.

In his words, “I waited till 9am when the exercise started, but to my surprise, the officials don’t even follow the list but collect money from people and register them immediately.”

Similarly, Frances Alannah, a civil servant, told our reporter that she and others visited the centre over four days yet they were unable to register. She decried the bribery going on in the exercise adding that with the situation many Nigerians will not be able to register and vote in the 2019 general elections.

In like manner, Mr. Kanayo Obi, who was at the Ogbeogonogo registration centre, said he was at the centre at about 4:30am, to write his name on the list of persons to be registered for the day, yet unable to do so.
