Ahead of the 2019 general elections, a group, Women for Women (W4W) has urged women residing in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to actively get involved and participate in politics.

In her address during a one day town hall meeting in Abuja yesterday, to sensitize women at the grassroots on voting ethics, the W4W FCT coordinator, Hajia Binta Ibrahim decried that the low level of political participation of women is becoming alarming and disturbing, saying it hampers women from contributing their quota to the development of the country.

Hajia Binta said women should rise above any form of discouragement and strive to make a difference.

She said the forum is ready to support any woman who wants to participate in politics irrespective of her political party.

Hajia Binta said as a forum they are more determined to halt the poor participation of women in Nigerian politics, adding that they are ready to support all women.

She noted that although the number of women in political positions is growing at a slow rate despite efforts to accelerate the trend, she said the forum will raise the percentage.

“We recognize that fact that women are not encouraged to run for elective position or actively participate in politics, this must stop, women rights are human right.

‘’The major restricting factors for women in Nigerian politics were sedentary in nature, adding that the predominantly domestic female role compelling and confining women to the home.

‘’In order to ensure active participation of women in politics, civil society organisations, governments as well as political parties should increase the level of awareness of women by organising seminars/workshops not only in the cities but also in the villages. This sensitization was organised to urge wives of the 36 area council’s chairperson in the FCT to mobilize women in the grass to actively get involved in politics,’’ she added.
