Tension In Nasarawa Over Killing Of 23-year-old Trader

There was tension in Kadarko community in Keana local government area of Nasarawa State, yesterday following the killing of a 23-year-old trader by operatives believed to be of the military task force in the area.

Our correspondent gathered that the victim, Terhemen Ior Tyovenda was  shot at close range in the head by one of the military special task force operatives, who rode on three motorcycles to Kadarko town.

An eyewitness, Barr Titus Chahur, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent, explained that the victim was killed while sitting at a relaxation centre within the township with four other friends when the soldiers numbering six, surrounded them and shot at the victim while his friends narrowly escaped.

He maintained that the late Terhemen, alongside his friends were discussing when the armed soldiers suddenly appeared and arrested two of the boys, shot the victim in the head even as the others escaped narrowly.

Our correspondent further gathered that the military operatives later released the two boys they had arrested and left the scene immediately when they noticed that the victim died on the spot.

The corpse was taken to the Police Station in Kadarko but the police only expressed their helplessness, claiming that the military unit is directly from the Presidency and not answerable to any other authority.

Reacting to the development, the president of the Tiv socio-cultural association, Mzogh U Tiv, Nasarawa State chapter, Thomas Gaar, condemned the action of the military operatives, and called for their arrest and prosecution in the interest of justice.

He regretted that the incident occurred when the Tiv people were still counting their losses in the recent unprovoked mayhem on Tiv villages in the southern senatorial district of the state by alleged armed Fulani herdsmen.

“It is very unfortunate that such a young person will be brutally murdered without any provocation by people who are supposed to protect lives and property.

“I totally condemn this act and appeal to the authorities concern to ensure that the perpetrators are fished out and brought to book in the interest of justice,” he said.

Efforts to reach the Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Umaru was unsuccessful as he could not respond to calls placed on his phone at press time.
