Professional Practices In Procurement Will Boost FG’s ERGP – CIPSMN

Leadership Nigeria News Today

The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply Management of Nigeria (CIPSMN), has called for proper procurement process in Nigeria in line with the Procurement Act of 2007, saying professionalised procurement system will give a boost to the nation’s Economic Recovery Growth Plan (ERGP).
The president, CIPSMN, Alhaji Abdulhamid Oyewo who disclosed this in his address during the annual conference of the institute yesterday, noted that ERGP can only be achieved by buying the right quality, quantity of goods and services at the right time and price by professionals in procurement.
Oyewo said ERGP as a strategy for ensuring a stable and steady growth of the Nigerian economy and implementation in line with international best practices would assist in the management of the economy.

He explained that the process of procurement as being practiced in the country currently had failed to meet international standard and fell short of the country’s procurement law.
Oyewo, however, decried that what is happening presently in the country is that those who are in charge of implementing the policy in the government are those who know nothing or close to nothing about procurement practices.
According to him, “What is happening presently in Nigeria is that those who will implement the policy in the government are those who know nothing or close to nothing about what to do. Most of the civil servants handing the implementation are even less than half baked processionals.

‘’I won’t call them professionals. It’s a mistake to mention the word professionals. What is happening presently is just like you give your wife some money to buy some foodstuff and you think the world purchasing and supply management is just like sending your wife to market to buy food.

‘’There are procedures; there are ways of doing things all over the world. By the special grace of the almighty God, before the end of September, I and my team will be going to attend in Finland an international federation of purchasing and supply management summit. That shows that we are under the umbrella of an international body.”

The registrar of the institute, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu said that the proper implementation of ERGP remains pivotal to the nation’s growth.

He said that the issue of procurement was a serious business that required professionals to drive since it consumed the bulk of national budget.
