The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, disclosed yesterday that no fewer than 30 Police Commissioners would be deployed to ensure a hitch-free governorship election in Osun State.
Speaking at a seminar organised by the office of the Inspector General for stakeholders in Osogbo, the IGP assured electorate in the statde of the preparedness of law enforcement agencies to ensure a peaceful election. Stakeholders at the seminar unanimously agreed to collaborate and ensure that the September 22 election is not only credible but also violent-free.
The seminar with the theme, “Imperativeness of Police Collaboration With Essential Stakeholders: Towards Secured, Free, Fair and Credible Election in Nigeria”, was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede. According to the Police boss, critical stakeholders will still meet to plan further, even as the Police would distribute telephone numbers that residents can call in the event of violence. At the one-day seminar held at De Distinguished hall, IGP Idris; Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi; the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr Segun Agbaje and political parties agreed to work towards peace at the forthcoming poll.
In their separate remarks, the stakeholders, including governorship candidates in the state agreed to be peaceful before, during and after the September 22 governorship election.
The REC reiterated his commitment to transparency, neutrality and credibility at the poll.
Agbaje called on the residents of the state to collect their Permanent Voter Cards.
We Will Ensure Peaceful Polls – Military
All security agencies in Nigeria are working round the clock to ensure that every part of the country is secure, safe and peaceful, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olanisakin, said yesterday.
Olanisakin who advised political players to sensitise the electorates on the need for peace added that peace is sacrosanct to attaining development.
Speaking when the Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Engr Mustapha Mulhaja, paid a visit to 119 Forward Operations Base Disaster Response of NAF in Sokoto yesterday, General Olanisakin who was represented by Maj. General Habila Vintenaba, director, Psychological Warfare, Defence Headquarters, noted that security agencies already have contingency plan on ground ahead of the 2019 general election to forestall any break down of law and order.
“Armed Forces and other paramilitary of Nigeria are ever ready to ensure that prior, during and after elections, every section of Nigeria remains safe”, Olanisakin said.
On his part, NEMA DG, represented by the director, Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Akugbe Iyamu, said they are not only preparing to ensure that emergency does not come to them as a surprise but that they should also be able to mitigate the impact by giving appropriate response.
Speaking earlier, the Commander 119 FOB, Group Captain Jay Usman, said the battalion is carrying our intelligence, surveillance as well as reconnaissance within their areas of responsibilities, which covers Sokoto and Kebbi States respectively.
While stressing that 119 FOB is one of the Disaster Response Unit of NAF that covers North Western axis of Nigeria, Usmanu added that they provides military aid to civil authority, military aid to civil power, including disaster response within their areas of response.
“The aim of this brief is to acquaint the CDS team with the Disaster Response Plan of 119 FOB with a view to making recommendations”.
Group Captain Usman, however, appealed for more equipment such as canoe and boats, amongst other logistics needed for rescue mission in the event of flood and any other disaster.
