The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has called for the adoption of effective sustainable reforms in the oil and gas industry to ensure responsible petroleum exploration.

At its third Engineering Week and Annual Conference, in Abuja, on Thursday, August 30th 2018 with the theme: “Environmental Issues in the Oil and Gas Industry,’’ Aishatu Umar, NSE chairman, Giri chapter, Abuja said there’s need to implement effective environmental management and protection of legislative and institutional frameworks to improve petroleum industry regulations in Nigeria.

Speaking further, Umar said reforms in the sector would enhance production activities, influence economic development in oil producing host communities and preserve human and environmental health.

On the degradation of the Niger Delta region, she said that the region, over the years, has experienced a wide range of environmental pollution, degradation, human health risks and socio-economic problems due to activities of petroleum exploration and production, adding that implementation of international environmental principles is critical for sustainable development, good environmental governance in the region.

“The federal government should review the relevant statutory laws and the 1999 Constitution for effective framework for regulation, sustainable objectives and environmental enforcement,” she said.

Keynote speaker at the event, Engr Babagana Mohammed, FNSE in his address said, there’s need to protect the environment, especially in the Niger Delta, specifically about oil exploration, saying sustainability is what will ensure that we use those resources judiciously without compromising same resource for future generations.

“We have to be very mindful of how we use the environment, and wherever we notice there are problems, there is need to take proactive measures to address those issues. In that way, we can leave a better environment for our children to live comfortably.”
