In a concerted bid to sustain and increase awareness on the dangers of illegal migration, the Edo State taskforxe on Advocacy against irregular migration and human trafficking weekend took  the campaign to Redeemed Christian Church of God, province 6
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Anti Human Trafficking Issues, Comrade Solomon Okoduwa who led other members of the taskforce expressed optimism that sustained sensitization on the dangers of human trafficking will help in Curbing the menace.
The advocacy coincided with the church’s 2018 Youth Convention with the theme, “The Advantage”
Okoduwa, ftadvised the youths not to be allowed to be cajoled by traffickers, but enjoined them to refrain from every activity capable of ruining their future and live exemplary lifestyle.
The SSA was emphatic that Governor Obaseki led government was winning the war against the scourge which has given Edo people bad name.
He said: “For you to be properly placed on the advantage side of life, you must first of all, have a purpose; that a life without a purpose is worst than disaster.
“The greatest tragedy in life is for one to live without a purpose and when you live without a purpose, you are like a ship without a compass; it’s like a city without a wall.” Okoduwa warned.
“That is why you see lot of people migrating in search of greener pastures and they end up being slaves in either Libya or Europe.  The girls are meant to cough out over $45,000 – $50,000 while the boys are being traded and most cases, they harvest their human organs, Okoduwa explained.
“That’s why Mr Governor said it must stop.  The Governor said he cannot fold his arms and allow his people to go through this type of journey, a journey of anguish, danger and death.”
“He has set up a task force against human trafficking, he has also domesticated the federal law to punish the offenders and lastly, he has asked us to embark on intensive advocacy to tell everyone about this ugly trend.”
“You will recall that Mr Governor promised to create enabling environment for investors to come in and invest in Edo State and that is what is happening.  When the right environment is created, we have right policies in place to drive the economy, people will bring in their money to invest and that means our youth will get jobs.”
“Edo State government through the Edo Job has been employing qualified candidates into some key areas.  Just recently, over 3000 youths were shortlisted for the recent EDSMA recruitment which was based on merit.  Edo State government has also partnered with IOM in training and empowering Libya Returnees and that has given face lift to several returnees.”
“It is important we tell you what the government is doing to make sure our youths do no longer think of living the country illegally.  If you want to travel abroad, Mr Governor said travel the right way.”
