NGO Launches Children’s Book On How To Tackle Corruption

A nongovernmental organisation, Step Up for Social Development and Empowerment in Nigeria (Step Up Nigeria) has launched a new children’s book ‘Emeka’s Money’, a modern parable to teach young people about the impact of corruption.

The book, ‘Emeka’s Money’ is a modern parable designed for children aged six to 10years old to help them understand the impact that corruption has within Nigerian society.

According to the executive director of the organisation and author of the book, Onyinye Ough, to fight corruption, we have to begin by teaching our children the right thing.

“Fighting corruption needs to start with what we teach our children.

“It requires a holistic approach. We need to go beyond the obvious like prosecutions and convictions or even making systems tougher through technology like BVNs or removing Ghost workers from payrolls. If we are going to stamp out corruption in Nigeria we need to go deeper and change how our society treats corruption.

“Corrupt people often do not realise they are corrupt. Most of them do not recognise that their actions are causing harm to people. To make matters worse, these corrupt persons are praised and celebrated for their corrupt actions by their friends, family and those who directly benefit. All of these factors makes it difficult to teach children about the harm corruption is having.”

According to her, the book, ‘Emeka’s Money’, as well as one of the flagship initiatives from Step Up Nigeria, ‘Catch them Young’ Initiative’, will be launched on Tuesday, September 4, at the Ventures Park, Abuja, where there will be a panel providing remarks at the launch, chaired by executive secretary of NEITI, Mr Waziri Adio, with other panellists including principal, Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) Academy, Dr Agodi Alagbe; special assistant on Digital/New Media to President Buhari, Mr Tolu Ogunlesi, and prominent Social Media influencer, Mr JJ Omojuwa.
