The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Women Radio, WFM 91.7, Toun Okewale Shonaya has stressed the need for mentorship in the country’s quest for rapid development.
Shonaya who stated this in a chat with LEADERSHIP at a mentorship workshop tagged, “Transforming The Future: Women Mentoring Women In The Workplace” organized by the US consulates in Lagos, said given the cultural environment in the country mentorship is very important in propelling people to greater heights.
According to her, “Mentorship is growing efficiency. Everyone have the talent to be efficient, you have the skills, but you need to grow it, you need to harness it and harness it in a structured way.
“There are respectable men in the society who have gone through series of trainings, they are coaches, they are mentors, they should gather men and young boys together and mentor them.
“What I can do is to mentor the female gender, women can come on board and maybe talk about the relationship or roles of women in the lives of men and the roles of men in our lives. Yes, we can contribute but it’s not in the place of a woman to mentor men.
“I am a woman and I know the dynamics of being a woman; I can understand, I can empathize but I can’t do that for a man. I feel men should also take it upon themselves to mentor men,” she said.
She added that, “women mentoring women is a very welcoming session which should be applied in all organizations, where women can get together to mentor themselves and train themselves in a structured mentoring format and environment.”
