No fewer than twenty-three persons have been reported to have feared killed in the last one year through the indiscriminate parking of petroleum tankers and trailers along the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Expressway in Warri, Delta State.
It was gathered that reckless parking of trailers and tankers has continued to create tension and fear of the unknown to the state government whose orders for owners to vacate the area seemingly fell on clear ears.
During nightfall, sources said, the reckless parking of the tankers and trailers constitute the menace to many commercial and privately owned vehicles’ drivers who often run into them as in most cases result in the death of innocent persons, some the by standards.
Addressing journalists in Asaba on Wednesday, the State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Vincent Uduaghan said the indiscriminate parking would soon be a thing of the past, disclosing that the reckless parking of tankers and trailers in the past one year, had caused avoidable accidents, and sometimes death of innocent persons.
He reiterated that Governor Okowa had given express approval long ago for the construction of a new park for long vehicles, adding that when completed the hue and cry of deaths caused by the indiscriminate parking of trailers and tanker drivers would be over.
The Commissioner said that owing to the importance of the project, and the concern of the State Governor, he has mandated the contractor handling the project to work day and night if possible to ensure the speedy completion of the project under Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
He disclosed that the ultra-modern tankers’ park on completion, would address the issues of trucks being parked hazardously in the area, adding that even the issue of traffic gridlock experienced in the Shagwuolo, Ubeji and Ifie areas would be taken care of by the park.
