‘Why Bayelsa Launched Safe Motherhood Initiatives For Pregnant Women’

The Bayelsa State deputy governor, Retired Rear Admiral John Jonah, has offered reasons why the present administration in the state initiated the Safe Motherhood Scheme for pregnant women in the state,  saying the initiative was launched to safe pregnant women from the dangers of traditional practices by Traditional Birth Attendants and professional misconduct from some health workers.

Deputy governor John Jonah, who called on pregnant women to key into the recently launched Safe Motherhood Initiative Policy of the Restoration Administration of governor Seriake Dickson and take advantage of modern health facilities that are now available in most rural communities.

The Bayelsa deputy governor, who gave the explanation while declaring open a meeting with state leaders of Churches and Clergy at the D.S.P. Memorial Banquet Hall, Government House , as part of the state government’s efforts to sensitise members of the public. .on the Safe Motherhood Initiative of the state government, said the traditional practices by Traditional Birth Attendants who take deliveries sometimes have limitations with the attendant dangers.

Jonah urged the expectant mothers to take advantage of modern health facilities that are now available in most rural communities,”the stipend that would be provided for those that will enroll into the Safe Motherhood Initiative was to enable them access health facilities with ease”.

The deputy governor also decried the poor attitude of some health workers who do not exhibit the right attitude while discharging their duties, stressing that the job of saving lives was not a tea party.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, Hon. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, commissioner for Information and Orientation, stated that the meeting with Church leaders was to enlighten them on the state government’s policy of Safe Motherhood Initiative, who in turn, are expected to sensitise their teeming members.
